TGIF: I’m (Almost) Ready for 2014

We’re only three days into the new year, and somehow I already feel as though I’m falling behind. My Twitter feed is full of links to posts containing long lists of goals and resolutions for 2014, and I’m honestly too overwhelmed at the thought of reading them that I’ve forced myself to glance past most. That’s not to say I’m not interested in reading what everyone’s goals are… I’m just simply not ready for a new year yet.

I had seven days off work, between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and I needed the break desperately. It didn’t take long for me to swap out my 7am start time for an 8am coffee in my pyjamas. I spent a few of my days off with family, then came home and made friends with my couch. I spent a lot of time under my cream-coloured fleece blanket, sipping homemade lattes, reading books and marathoning Season 1 of The Good Wife.

If I wasn’t hanging out with my good friend, Couch, I was in the kitchen – baking up a storm. For whom? Myself, I suppose. There’s still 3/4 of a banana pecan loaf on my counter, as well as a good 12-15 chocolate chip cookies. (If anyone’s hungry, my door is open.) Reading Molly Wizenberg’s A Homemade Life in only 2 days probably had something to do with it, but I’ve also recently discovered how beautifully things bake in a gas range. I think I get more satisfaction from seeing how amazing everything looks when I take it out of the oven, than I do about how good it all tastes. (And I’m sure I’ve gained 5 lbs., but I couldn’t care less.)

Needless to say, I’ve spent the last week living in a state of complete relaxation. Some days seemed to last 36 hours, while others flew by, but I know I soaked up every last minute of my time off that I could. Now, with that being said, my list of goals for 2014 is ready and scheduled for next Wednesday. I’m excited about the approach I plan to take in 2014, because it’s simple, realistic and positive. But we can talk more about that next week. I need a few more days on the couch, before I’ll be ready to start…

The low of my week was nothing. But let’s say falling asleep before 10pm on New Year’s Eve, haha. 

The high of my week was being featured as one of The Globe and Mail’s Top 10 Personal Finance Stories of 2013. To me, this speaks volumes about what other Canadians are facing with their own financial situations. Will 2014 be the year you tackle your debt?

A blog post I loved was Welcome to Paris by Seth Godin. Read it and consider how many opportunities you could miss out on by living in front of a screen. I’ve become obsessed with asking anyone and everyone for coffee lately, because the conversations you have in-person have the potential to be life-changing.

The best money I spent was $7.10 to upgrade my disability insurance policy coverage. More on that next week, along with my reorganized January budget.

My plans this weekend include more couch time, a little writing, and hopefully spending Sunday afternoon with a friend who will be visiting from Victoria.

    Well Cait, that’s exactly what holidays are for – to relax, de-stress, just veg, and in other words, just chill. That said, however, I definitely KNOW that right now you would not miss living here in Toronto.

    I woke up this morning to minus 10 F(ie., – 24 C) on my old thermometer, outside the kitchen window. No TIMS coffee run this morning. I’ll make it in my Keurig coffee maker instead (my younger Montreal self would consider me a wimp for doing that and not venturing outside – lol).

    Yesterday was almost as cold but I braved it outside nonetheless to meet my daughter downtown for some bonding (her late Christmas present to me was a spa pedicure and lunch). Lots of fun. Much better than getting a pair of socks.

    Hopefully, as forecast for this weekend, it will warm up here (to a “balmy” -2C) so I can start clearing my back yard of all the many broken downed tree branches, resulting from our recent big ice storm. The city plans to spend $75M over the next 8 weeks removing all the tree debris from the ice storm. Oh well, another tax increase on the way eventually. :-(

    And so it goes. No sweating the small stuff, eh? Especially in this weather! :-)

      I’ve been following along with the weather updates on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. and, you’re right, I’m happy to not be there – or anywhere near the East Coast, for that matter. I’m currently watching blue skies try to peek out from behind some light clouds, and drawing the blinds because the sun is in my eyes. Granted, it was still -1°C this morning, but that didn’t stop me from heading down to the grocery store for milk without a jacket. (Shall I stop rubbing it in now? haha)

      I do hope it warms up soon, so the other half of the country can stop suffering through this harsh winter. $75 million, eh? That’s brutal.

  2. That sounds like a great holiday. Mine was similar – a few days with family and friends, then a few days as a shut in. It was awesome. One of my goals was to read three books per month and I already have one finished because of the break.

    I woke up to a blizzard (actually) so my work was closed. I just have a short conference call. Essentially back to work for one day after the break and then a three day weekend right off the bat!

    I still want some of those cookies! Or at least the recipe :)

    Sounds like you had a nice little holiday Cait. As you know down here in Newfoundland we are experiencing record breaking low temperatures while our energy provider has been giving us rolling blackouts to ease the demands on our power generating systems. Also we are waiting for what is forecasted to be our first blizzard so far this winter (we are looking at high winds and 25-40cm). Most of us are already sick of winter. We almost got enough snow this past December to break the top ten winters ever in St. John’s but we fell short by less than 2cm. So right now I’m just trying to stay positive and warm and I may even pray that I can get home from work before it all starts. This last two weeks or so of almost constant snowfall is really making me wish I could have actually taken Christmas holidays… preferably down south. But I think I would have settled with being able to stay home and just watch it fall from inside.

  4. I was lucky enough to have three days off of work in row. Today is the last one and I do not want to go back. Especially when I have to go back and work seven in a row.

    I have done nothing but will have to at least do laundry today so I have something to wear to work. The first thing I am going to do is book a week of vacation for the spring so I have something to look forward to.

    I did do and redo my 2014 budget because I screwed up the first one.

      I’ve had to redo my budget a few times, as well! I’m trying to make projections for the year, for the first time… we’ll see how that turns out.

  5. It’s colder in Toronto than Mars right now, so this weekend I’m working on the Apartment Therapy January Cure to make my apartment dazzle. That and writing my own resolutions for 2014 ;)

      Do you have annual goals that you break down into monthly goals? Or just new goals for each month?

      • This year I’m doing it in the style of The Happiness Project.

        So January is about taking care of myself. I’ll continue it on into the rest of the year but each month add in something else. This way I’m not starting out trying to do it all.

  7. I had completey intended to use these last few days of my holidays to get back to a regular schedule and routine before going back to work this week. Then I stayed up til 1 am playing Super Nintendo and I don’t even care because it was totally worth it. Enjoy what’s left of the holidays – you have all year to go full-speed ahead!

  8. Oh man. Those cookies look GOOD! Same with the bread. My time off was NOT relaxing, so I am a bit jealous right now, haha. It was a well deserved break for you! I’m a few days behind when it comes to accepting the fact that it’s 2014 and that I need to start working toward my goals for 2014. It still hasn’t sunk in!

  11. I would LOVE to get coffee with you and pick your brain for a day. My screen time has been annoyingly consuming lately, especially when put with my work screen time. I’ll have to check out that blog post to see what I’m doing wrong or gather some inspiration!

  12. I hear you on already feeling behind. I hardly feel like I had any kind of break at all. And definitely have not had much of a social life so I need to read that article. I don’t know if I’, glad I’m so swamped right now with work, or overwhelmed…maybe a little of both?

  13. I think you’re actually ahead – taking the time to relax and reflect as opposed to diving into a manic attack of doing. I don’t have my resolutions up either, I have some ideas but I want to make sure they fit who I am and where I am in my life. Why promise myself that I’ll do a bunch of things I don’t like because it seems like a good idea to everyone else?

    Cheers, I look forward to reading your goals. I am going to go the gym again, though. Fake it until you make it, baby.
